Attention Problems in Children and Adults
There are many causes of attentional problems. Examples include attention-deficit disorder (ADD), depression, anxiety, and dementia. Most frequently, attentional problems are assessed by using behavioral rating scales. Although these are helpful in describing the presence and frequency of behaviors that are often exhibited by individuals with attention problems, they are not a direct measurement of attention and they cannot determine the cause of attention problems (for example, ADD vs. depression) or how best to treat them. Neuropsychological testing, in conjunction with rating scales, can usually answer these questions.
